Willem van Aelst (Utrecht (?), 1625 or 1626 - Amsterdam, around 1683) is a painter of still life of flowers and Dutch hunting (United Provinces) of the Golden Century. His work is remarkable for the skill of his compositions - he introduced asymmetry in the still life - and the skilful harmony of his colors. Willem van Aelst was born of a father notary. He studied painting in Delft, with his uncle, the painter of still life Evert van Aelst. On November 9, 1643, van Aelst was admitted to the guild of Saint-Luc. From 1645 to 1649, he lives in France, which will be important for the development of his art. He then undertook a trip to Italy, where he remained from 1649 to 1656. In Rome, van Aelst was a member of the Bentvueghels, among which he would have been called "Vogelverschrikker" ("Scarecrow"); nothing, however, bears witness to the presence of the artist in this city. In Florence, along with two other Dutchmen, Matthias Withoos and Otto Marseus Van Schrieck, he is active at the court of Ferdinand II de Medicis. The Grand Duke of Tuscany will give him a gold medal as a reward for his services. From this period were preserved several still lifes of flowers and hunting, visible at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. In 1656 van Aelst returned to the Netherlands with Marseus Van Schrieck. He comes to settle in Amsterdam. He is one of the first to specialize in the still life of hunting and becomes one of the most important still life painters of his generation, which allows him to live on the Prinsengracht. His main followers are Rachel Ruysch and Jan Van Huysum. On January 15, 1679, he married in Amsterdam Helena Nieuwenhuys, who was 35 years old. It is probably in 1683, or shortly after, that van Aelst dies; it is in any case the year which appears on his last dated work.
