Detailed Description
A magnificent Empire mantel clock portraying Paul et Virginie, ca. 1800-1805
Based on a larger model of Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843).
Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's novel Paul and Virginie, published in 1788, was a huge success and influenced the French Romantics as well as a number of fashion and opera and the clock cases.
The depiction is the figures Paul et Virginie with a dog to symbolize fidelity and they are carried on a palanquin by two African natives.
