Detailed Description
Pair of candlesticks attributed to deverberie. Empire period.
Nice pair of candlesticks in chiseled bronze, gilt and patinated; foot as a blackmoore crowned, dressed in a fringed skirt and housing with arrows. He is represented with one leg up and holding in his hands a branch full of leaves and roses. The cylindrical base made of black marble apply a small bronze depicting a goddess dressed in a draped dress; all it surrounded by a ring of palmettes.
Deverberie Jean-Simon (1764-1824) is among the most important Parisian artists of the late 18th century and first decades of the 19th century De broncista and watchmaker profession is heavily influenced by the "exotic" characters, evoking the theme in his creations the typical "noble savage" of 18th century literature I realize many clocks, candlesticks and candelabra called "the negritos", whose drawings are kept in the cabinet stamping of the National Library in Paris.
