Stigmas are signals or marks that appear spontaneously, always attached to mysticism and the proof of a real God that is able to create, influence and mold the universe at it's will.
The stigmatization of Saint Francis is a biblical event which took place in 1224 during the fest of the Exaltación de la Santa Cruz. The Saint set apart and started to pray, and he received a series of stigmas that involved the same wounds that Christ had while hanging on the cross.
On our artwork painted in Cuzco in the second half of the 18th century, we are able to see a beautiful depiction of the event descripted above. This Southamerican anonymous artist did a great job while focusing on the diagonal traced from the lower left to the upper right part of the painting, pointing out Saint Francis receives the exact same wounds that Christ on the cross.
Vegetation on the background and two angels holding up Saint Francis so he does not collapse are great additions to the ouevre here presented, so as the details in gold paint applied on the drappery and halo of the characters - very characteristic of colonial paintings.
Oil on canvas. Relined. Framed. Good conditions overall, painting loss in some areas. Beautifully represented and painted.
