Ecce Homo are the words in latin for 'here is the man' - the phrase that Pontius Pilate said when he presented Jesus Christ to the crowd before his Crucifixion. This scene has been widely represented in Christian Art and the best artists from all ages were part of that.
It's mandatory to have this scene depicted when the whole Passion and the Life of Christ is represented. The compositions of the Ecce Homo known in art is not standard and his drappery suffers variations depending on the regions and period. Being that said, Jesus tends to be painted in half or full figure with a purple robe, loincloth and torture wounds, together with the crown of thorns - other versions could include him half naked or with red drappery.
Our version represents Christ slightly tilt to his right. Alone, without anybody grabbing him, the european baroque background colors and style is present. Sepia colors make this Ecce Homo a beautiful depiction of Southamerican Art from the early 18th century.
Colorless skintone Christ is tied from the hands and his neck as well as he is wearing a reddish robe. His tunica has a greyish-purple tone meanwhile his head has suffered several impacts and is wounded. Despite he is used to be painted with the crown of thorns, the skilled artist from Cuzco did not include it on our version.
Oil on canvas. Relined. Restored in 1941 in Lima. Carved wood frame. Good conditions in general terms.
