Descrizione Dettagliata
A painting of the Lamentation over the Dead Christ by a French neo-classical artist. The execution is of the very highest quality, and deserves a name - to be researched. Possibly close to Jean-Baptiste Regnault.
On the back of the stretcher is written 'Augustin Carrache', because the composition derives from a painting once though to be by Carracci. Interestingly, when that painting - now re-attributed to a French artist - was bought by the Louvre in 1823, it was attributed to Ludovico Carracci, not Agostino Carracci, so this derivation must have been made before then.
This painting certainly corrects the presumed original - now in Dijon - in the direction of late-eighteenth century style. And indeed it is especially interesting because it is actually much more finely painted. It is undoubtedly by a major artist.
The condition is very good, and the painting was recently cleaned. It is presented in a period Empire-style frame.
