Advertising and costume design in the early 20th century, for entertainment centres such as the Moulin Rouge and the Ambassadeurs in the Montmartre district of Paris, was a great way to make a fortune.
Although it only happened to a few, one of them was a young artist from Normandy called Gaston Noury.
Gaston learned the art of drawing from a master, his grandfather who was the director and curator of the local art museum.
Among the frequent visitors to the Noury house were artists such as Pissaro, Renoir, Monet and Degas.
At the age of 23, he moved to Paris and settled in the shadow of the newly built Basilique du Sacré-Cœur.
Within 12 to 15 years, the artist's fortunes grew, but his dissatisfaction with insignificant projects made him want to go beyond costumes and art posters.
His decision to move into advertising and publishing led him to more serious work and he soon found some happiness in book illustration. He also gained notoriety in the field of fashion design through the exposure of his work in magazines and in-house publications.
In October 1918, his wife was taken by the Spanish flu, deeply affected, he returned to Le Havre and then settled in Saint-Adresse, not far from Sarah Bernhardt's house.
He devoted himself entirely to his art and practised oil painting, gouache, watercolour and also pastel. Refusing to remarry, he raised his three children alone.
During his last years, he experienced misery: unable to buy canvases, he also painted on plywood.
His last productions are still lifes of different flowers, as his health condition does not allow him to move anymore.
Possibility of selling by the unit: 1200€ the piece
