Italo-Flemish school (18th century) - Penitent Magdalene oil

According to Christian tradition, after meeting Christ, Mary Magdalene repented of her former sinful ways. With her ivory skin and long golden hair, the beautiful Magdalene turns her gaze toward heaven. Her cross and the skull make it clear she is meditating on the brevity of life and the salvation made possible by Christ's death.

Our fine version involves a Magdalene looking above his head, sitting on a rock on an open landscape. Her left hand rests above the so symbolical skull and her right hand is right side up in sign of mercy. In addition, the wooden cross above her left shoulder is slightly visible due to the rocky colours beside the Magdalene.

Yellowish and rose drappery, with a slightly curly blonde hair just below her shoulders are some characteristics of this great depiction which call the atention of the spectator.


Oil on copper. Good conditions. Dirty, a cleaning and full restoration would fit great. Unsigned, framed.
