Descrizione Dettagliata
Large wooden statue (oak) carved in the round, polychromed and gilded, representing the Archangel Saint Michael in Roman-style armour.
The archangel is depicted overcoming the devil, his right arm raised to brandish the spear aimed at his enemy, who was under his feet.
He wears a neatly waved half-length hairdo, framing a youthful face, with a victorious expression.
He is clad in Italian-inspired armour, consisting of a bulging breastplate holding a "braconière" made up of blades called "flankers" overlapping from top to bottom to protect the thighs.
A harness is attached to his belt and holds a sword scabbard.
Finally, a pair of strikes completes his equipment.
The style of his equipment, which is Italian influenced, and the figure representing the evil at his feet lead us to place this sculpture in the 16th century.
Period : 16th Century
Dimensions : Height : 83cm x Width : 18cm x Depth : 35cm
(Damage and missing parts)
Michael is one of the seven major archangels (with Gabriel and Raphael in particular) of the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam). He is called archangel, or chief angel, in the Bible.
His name comes from the Hebrew Mîkhâêl, and is designated as the "appointed protector of the Hebrew people.
Chief of the heavenly militia of angels of Good, he is mainly represented at the time of the end of times, striking down evil, with the scales of the weighing of souls, judge and guide of the salvation of souls for Hell and Paradise (symbolic allegory of the victory of Good over Evil).
In 1469, Louis XI founded the Order of Chivalry of Saint Michael in memory of the beautiful resistance of Mont Saint-Michel against the English and the victory in 1425.
It is from this moment that the Saint appears as the protector of the kingdom.
In terms of iconography, three types can be distinguished, sometimes overlapping: - Saint Michael, conqueror of the dragon, - the weigher of souls, - the fighter in the Hundred Years' War. (Extract from "Le Grand Livre des Saints, Culte et iconographie en Occident" by Jacques Baudoin.
